Lalit Modi loses libel case, must pay Cairns 90,000 pounds

Posted: 26 Mar 2012 10:22 AM PDT

Lalit Modi’s cup of woes seems to be overflowing.

The axed IPL Commissioner lost a libel case to former New Zealand cricketer Chris Cairns on Monday and will have to pay 90,000 pounds (app Rs 73 lakh) in damages to the all-rounder.

Neither party was present when the verdict — which is open to appeal — was announced in the High Court in London

Modi had accused Cairns of being involved in match-fixing during the rebel Indian Cricket League in 2008.
The embattled administrator will now have to cough up a part of the damages within the next 28 days and has until April 20 to file an appeal.

"Your client is a man of some means, you’ll need to persuade me on a stay," the court said, when Modi’s lawyer asked for a stay on damages.
Cairns was captain of Chandigarh Lions in the Indian Cricket League but his contract was terminated in October 2008, during the third edition of the tournament. The official reason given was that Cairns had breached the terms of his contract by failing to disclose an ankle injury.
In his capacity as IPL commissioner at that point, Modi had made these allegations on Twitter in 2010 while justifying the decision to keep Cairns out of the league.
Cairns, 41, then sued Modi, stating that "the claim was untrue and therefore libelous, and had damaged his reputation".
After hearing the arguments from both sides in a nine-day trial, Justice David Bean of the London High Court ruled in favour of Cairns. Justice Bean, who was hearing the case without a jury, also awarded Cairns 400,000 pounds in interim costs, which Modi will have to pay within 28 days.
The judge said Modi had "singularly failed" to provide any reliable evidence that Cairns was involved in match-fixing or spot-fixing, or even strong grounds for suspicion of cheating.
"It is obvious that an allegation that a professional cricketer is a match-fixer goes to the core attributes of his personality and, if true, entirely destroys his reputation for integrity," Justice Bean said.
"The allegation is not as serious as one of involvement in terrorism or sexual offences. But it is otherwise as serious an allegation as anyone could make against a professional sportsman," the judge said.
Modi’s legal team told the court Cairns was corrupt but the Kiwi insisted his ICL dismissal was due to an ankle injury which he did not declare.
Cairns said the match-fixing allegation put a strain on his marriage as well.
"It had a profound effect on my personal and private life," Cairns told the court.
In his four-hour closing summary, Cairns’s lawyer, Andrew Caldecott QC, had stated that his client had been made "a scapegoat of convenience".

La Liga: Ronaldo becomes fastest player to score 100 goals

Posted: 26 Mar 2012 10:21 AM PDT

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has set a new record after he became the fastest player to reach 100 goals in the Spanish league.

The record comes only after three days of Barcelona’s Lionel Messi becoming their all time highest scorer, The Daily Mail reports.

Ronaldo surpassed former record-holder and Madrid great Ferenc Puskas on Saturday when he scored a brace in Madrid’s 5-1 thrashing of Real Sociedad at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

He has now taken his tally to 101 goals in 92 league matches, whereas Puskas had taken 105 matches to score his first 100 goals.

The former Manchester United player Ronaldo is primed to have his best season ever for Madrid with 45 goals in all competitions so far.

After an 80 million pound move from Manchester United to Madrid in the summer of 2009, Ronaldo scored 26 league goals in his first season.

Meanwhile former England manager Terry Venables has said Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola wouldn’t take the vacant position at Chelsea due to one man (Jose Mourinho).

Venables believes the fact that Mourinho’s Real Madrid is set on course to win the Spanish La Liga this season would bother Guardiola the most, even if he wins the Champions League for the third time in his tenure.

Guardiola wouldn’t like to leave Barcelona after they surrender their title to Real Madrid since he has a fighter personality, according to Venables.
"He is only 41 and he will need a new challenge in the not-too-distant future. A Premier League club would be the next obvious mountain. But I also believe Guardiola would want to bow out at Barcelona at the top. Of Europe. Of the world. And, most importantly, of La Liga," Venables wrote in his column for the Sun.
"They are currently second to Mourinho’s Real Madrid, who look on course to finish as champions. If that happens, I cannot see Guardiola turning his back on Barcelona, even if they beat their El Classico rivals to win the Champions League," he added.
"Guardiola is a natural competitor as well as a super-natural coach. He’d surely not want to walk away after losing his La Liga crown," he said.
Venables said the other reason why Mourinho would be a stumbling block for Guardiola to join Chelsea is the fact that most of the managers at Chelsea have lived under the shadow of Mourinho, who brought so many laurels to the club.
Whether it is Avram Grant Phil Scolari, Carlo Ancelotti or Andre Villas-Boas, all of these were fired because they couldn’t take Chelsea to the heights where Mourinho took them, and comparison with him would be palpable.

"Avram Grant, Big Phil Scolari, Carlo Ancelotti and Andre Villas-Boas were all shown the door at Stamford Bridge arguably because they could not hold a candle to their predecessor. It is ironic then Mourinho could now scupper the appointment of Guardiola as the Blues’ next boss. How? Let me explain," Venables said.

The Brutal Training to Become a Shaolin Monk

Posted: 26 Mar 2012 08:54 AM PDT

One man hauls up two ropes and hooks them under either arm as suddenly their tautness threatens to split him in two. Harnessed to the other end of each rope is an ox, a pair of beasts pulling with all their weight and power in opposite directions.

Grimacing, the man in the middle of this struggles to keep his limbs, let alone his balance, and yet he stays centred like a rock. The man is a Shaolin Warrior Monk, and tasks like these are de riguer – part of the brutal daily training through which he will achieve not only formidable strength and resilience but physical, mental and spiritual harmony.

Practicing the meditative art of qigong, a profound wisdom and mysterious power that uses controlled breathing and graceful movements to circulate qi – or energy flow – throughout the body, Shaolin Monks gain the ability to perform near superhuman feats. As these disciples of Kung Fu learn to summon qi, they can direct this life energy to different parts of the body, which are thus bestowed with incredible toughness – made as strong as steel and able to withstand and deliver tremendously powerful blows.

It is through qigong that the crown of a man’s head can break stones and iron plates; that the hands can smash bricks and break solid sticks, and the feet splinter rocks and staffs. Even the most vulnerable parts of the body can become impervious to otherwise de*dly att*cks from bladed weapons such as swords: the stomach can resist lying on the sharp point of a trident or the throat the thrust of a man’s spear simply through gathering qi to that region of the body to prevent it from being injured.

Learning to harness the power of qi takes years of gruelling training. The only way the body’s natural energy will reinforce its structural strength is through repetition of exercises day after day. To strengthen fists – which are fragile and damage-prone despite their use in att*cks – students daily punch walls for hours until eventually their hands are solid. To protect the brain, the skull is hardened greatly by repeated strikes each day, and the head banged against objects to train it to resist the shock of an att*ck.

Other seemingly brutal training methods practiced range from the wrestling of bulls to the iron neck exercise, where the individual is hung by the neck from a cloth noose – an experience that while initially only sufferable for seconds, when mastered can be endured for minutes at a time. This latter technique is very useful in combat, for it fortifies a particularly delicate part of the body and should enable a defender to get free and counteratt*ck if caught by an enemy in an arm lock.

Kung Fu means phenomenal amounts of work, effort and time invested in training, and those instructed in the hard Shaolin style must also expect pain and self-torture, often from an early age, if they wish to master their art. At one school, daily training starts at 5:30 am to the tune of a military siren, and no one wants to be late, as they will be punished mercilessly by the trainers with stick blows and press-ups. During the day that follows the aspiring young monks will follow a gruelling regime.

Conditioning and endurance training are undergone in an early morning session of running at different speeds – from sprints to climbs up hundreds of stairs. After breakfast, stretches like the splits and the crab take trainees beyond the pain barrier, before basic elements of the Shaolin Kung Fu like leg movements, blocks, strikes and stands are taught with exhausting repetition. Weapons training follows lunch, and the teaching of acrobatics such as somersaults, flips and cartwheels on hard stone floors.

The day’s training finishes at 6 pm, though underachieving is punishable by an extra hour-and-a-half session during the late evening. Even if limping, pupils must participate in training, and one month a year is all the time they are permitted off. It is noted that many foreigners cannot cope with this extreme training, their bodies suffering debilitating cramps. Blood will be lost but new muscles will also be trained. Yet, mercifully, the pain will ease after one month and slowly subside after several more.

For centuries, persistence has been vital to becoming a Shaolin Monk, with years of discipline necessary. Ten traditional and complex combat precepts must also be followed: agility, speed and energy; co-ordinated motion and rest of arms and feet; unique fusion of the body’s five ‘elements’; the eight-point theory of ‘ba tiao’ relating to defence; the stout gait of a god; knowledge of arm and leg work; simultaneous advance of limbs; all-round defence; harmony of eyes, ears and heart intelligence; and use of sinews.

Achieving mastery of these precepts is the path a Shaolin Monk must take, and yet these warriors have traditionally studied martial arts not just as a means of self-defence or even mental training, but as a system of ethics and morality. From the time the Shaolin Temple was founded in the 5th century, through numerous social changes – and the destruction of the monastery many times – the Shaolin Monks have served and earned respect of the people of China as warriors and priests. The ancient principles to which they adhered set an example for students of the Shaolin way today.

Gayle signs agreement with WICB

Posted: 26 Mar 2012 08:47 AM PDT

Jamaica: Chris Gayle has signed an agreement with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) but there is still no clarity on the explosive opener`s return to the national side.

The agreement was brokered by CARICOM. Apart from the agreement, Gayle has written a `side-letter` to the WICB, its contents however were not disclosed.

"Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves (of St Vincent) provided a copy of Gayle`s `side letter`. The matter was discussed and the Board will respond to the Prime Minister shortly," a WICB release said. Gayle and WICB are at loggerheads since last year when in an interview the left-handed batsman criticised the Board and coach Ottis Gibson.

The Board had asked Gayle to retract his statement or apologise for his remarks. It was reported earlier that Gayle would do so.

The `Jamaica Gleaner` reported that the agreement, which was drafted by CARICOM in a bid to solve the impasse between the former captain and the Board, had been signed by the WICB a few weeks ago.

Gayle is contracted to represent Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL-V from April 4 to May 27 and Somerset in England`s domestic Twenty20 tournament later in the summer.

Mahindra Racing triumphs in Italian Championship

Posted: 26 Mar 2012 08:45 AM PDT

Mugello (Italy): Mahindra Racing has scripted history here by becoming the first Indian team to win the season opening race of the 125GP Italian Championship here.

It was also a good race for the Indian Sarath Kumar, who unfortunately was forced to an early retirement due to a technical issue.

Moretti started the race Sunday from the pole thanks to the outstanding performance displayed in the two qualifying sessions, while Kumar got off from the eighth row and the 22nd spot on the grid. It was the first week-end for the young Indian rider on the Italian track; also the crash suffered during the wet 2nd qualifying session didn`t help though it led to no injury.

Moretti got a fantastic start of the race and he both maintained and quickly extended his leadership on the opponents. Kumar, on the other hand, didn`t get the best start but was able to settle into a good rhythm and to overtake several riders ahead of him.

As the race went into its second half Moretti`s advantage on the runner-up grew to an amazing 10 seconds, while Kumar kept pushing hard before pulling to an early and unlucky retirement – due to a technical problem he experienced with three laps to go, after a good battle with Luca Marini – brother of Valentino Rossi. The race ended with an overpowering victory by Moretti, who crossed the finish line with a big margin over the rest of the field, that means first place in the standings

Muffadal Choonia, Team Mahindra Racing Principal, said: "We feel ecstatic winning the first race of the italian championship which is one of the toughest national motor racing championships in the world. A victory in our debut race is a shot in the arm. We are now in the right frame of mind to vie for the championship title!"

Moretti said the season started in the best way possible.

My start from the grid was a good one and since I was in the lead I tried to push at my best to get the best margin possible. I was able to do so and that allowed me to just manage the advantage in the second part of the race. During the course of the week-end I got to know both bike and time much better and I can say we`re still not at 100 percent but surely there`s good room for improvements. I would like to thank my team that gave me a very competitive bike and I`m looking forward to the next event, that will take place at Imola," he said.

Sarath was also happy with his experience.

"It`s been a very good experience for me, despite the technical problem that didn`t allow me to finish the race. I learned a lot, though. I didn`t get the perfect start but my race pace was not so bad. Next time I will do better, I`m sure," he said.

ATP/WTA Miami Masters tournament

Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray advance at Miami tennis

Miami: World number two Rafael Nadal cruised through to the last 16 at the ATP/WTA Miami Masters tournament, while fourth seeded Andy Murray advanced without even breaking a sweat on Sunday.

Nadal continued his domination over Czech Radek Stepanek with a straight forward 6-2, 6-2 victory in a third round match on centre court.

Murray reached the fourth round by not hitting a ball when Canadian Milos Raonic withdrew with a right ankle injury.

Nadal, who is chasing his first Miami title, has now beaten Stepanek in all six contests dating back to their first meeting in 2004.

"I am just happy to be in the fourth round winning two matches with positive feeling and with comfortable results," Nadal said. "I will just try to keep doing well and try to keep improving a little bit the level."

Nadal finished with three aces, won 74 percent of his first-serve points and saved both break point chances he faced in the 86 minute match.

Nadal advances to face Japan’s Kei Nishikori who breezed past Czech Lukas Rosol 6-4, 6-2 Sunday.

"He’s a fantastic player and will be a very difficult match for me," Nadal said of Nishikori. "He has big talent to hit the ball very early, to play very aggressive."

The 24-year-old Scot Murray will tackle French 13th seed Gilles Simon for a place in the quarter-finals of a tournament he won in 2009.

Highly-regarded Canadian 26th seed Raonic had already been forced to pull out of the doubles on Saturday where he and South African partner Kevin Anderson had managed just three games against Michael Llodra and Nenad Zimonjic.

The 21-year-old Raonic had been in a rich vein of form in 2012, winning titles in Chennai and San Jose and making the final in Memphis.

At Indian Wells last week, he was knocked out in the third round by eventual champion Roger Federer.

"The doctor in Spain doesn’t think it’s anything big. It probably just needs a couple days of rest and, with treatment, it should be OK in a week," said Raonic.

"It’s frustrating, but you have to look at the big picture."

Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov recorded his first victory over a top 10 player when he beat seventh-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 in two hours and 16 minutes.

Dimitrov saved five of seven break points to reach the fourth round of a Masters 1000 tournament for the first time.

The 20-year-old Dimitrov will next face ninth-seeded Serb Janko Tipsarevic, who fired down 10 aces to get past 18th-seeded Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.

Tipsarevic leads Dimitrov 2-0 in their head-to-head series, with both meetings coming last year at Eastbourne and Washington.

On the women’s side, American wild card Venus Williams struggled to defeat Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7/5) and top seed Victoria Azarenka powered past Heather Watson 6-0, 6-2 in third round matches on Sunday.

Williams advances to face former world number one Ana Ivanovic who beat 20th seeded Daniela Hantuchova 6-2, 7-6 (7/2).

"I just kept coming back," Williams said. "I tried not to let anything discourage me today. I kept thinking about how I really need this match and I need these points."

Azarenka will square off against 16th seeded Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova for a spot in the quarter-finals.

In other women’s matches Sunday, French seventh seed Marion Bartoli defeated Simona Halep 6-4, 7-6 (8/6) and Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska crushed Silvia Soler-Espinosa, of Spain 6-1, 6-2.
